Typical scenario

Coat composition inferred from a lining sample

If a report infers the whole coat’s synthetic-fibre share from an inner swatch, check the sampling location. Lining, insulation and outer cloth may have different declared compositions. Review needs a garment diagram, extraction photograph and identification of components included in the weighed sample.

What needs to be clarified

Check whether the sample answers the outer-cloth composition question, and assess method suitability, mass-fraction calculation and conclusions for the identified garment layers.

Materials to prepare

  • Opinion with complete analytical protocols and mass-fraction calculations
  • Coat, composition label and sampling-location diagram
  • Remaining sample, packaging and photographs before layer separation

What to compare

Match each layer’s label with sample identification and preparation. Check separation of lining, adhesives and trim and required method corrections. Recalculate from original masses, noting uncertainty. Compare conclusions with the material actually analysed, identifying coat parts not submitted to the laboratory.

Possible outcome of the analysis

The review may identify the supported sample composition, invalid transfers to other layers and a justified resampling plan answering the original question about the coat fabric.

Limits of the conclusions

Fibre appearance does not always yield quantitative mixture composition. Lining analysis does not describe outer cloth; no remaining sample limits checks of preparation and layer identity.
