A change in fit after washing does not in itself explain the cause. The examination needs information about the item's condition before care, exactly what changed and what procedures were carried out. Washing it again or trying to stretch it may alter the signs and make comparison more difficult.
Describe the specific change
Instead of saying 'the item was ruined', identify the areas affected: sleeve length, seam twisting, panel width, edge waviness or lining deformation. Record the whole item and close-up views. Measurements are useful when it is clear which points they were taken between and how the item was positioned.
What information is available about the condition before care
- Photographs of the item before first use and being worn, if they relate to this particular item.
- Documents on size, model and stated composition.
- Results of earlier measurements, if they were actually taken.
- Information about alterations, repairs and previous care.
- Retained labels, packaging and the receipt or another purchase document.
Care history without guesswork
State the programme, known temperature, spin method, detergent, drying and ironing. If some parameters are unknown, record that. A control setting and the actual treatment conditions are not always identical, so no stated regime can be treated as fully confirmed without examination.
When taking an item to a dry cleaner or laundry, retain the receipt, description of its condition at intake, the service requested and collection documents. It is important to note who first discovered the change and when.
What is checked in a comparison
The specialist assesses the construction, material, nature and distribution of the deformation, labelling information and care history. Shrinkage does not automatically establish either a manufacturing shortcoming or a consumer's failure to follow instructions. A conclusion about the cause requires a combination of signs.
If original measurements are unavailable
The absence of measurements before treatment limits direct comparison but does not rule out every possibility of examination. Panel proportions, local changes, manufacturer information and other relevant materials may matter. Their suitability is assessed for the specific question, without replacing the missing original measurement with an average for all clothing of that size.
Before inspection, do not steam or stretch the item to restore its appearance. Preserve it in its current condition and disclose all attempts to correct the problem. This helps distinguish the original change from the consequences of subsequent actions.
